 Past Reports

Current San Diego Sportfishing Report - Boats are focusing on rockfish/rockcod trips . These are excellent food runs with light loads so don't let the lack of tuna discourage from getting out on the water for a day.

Best bet for planning a trip focusing on tuna and exotics out of the San Diego fleet is book early. Best shot at an overnighter scoring best is about mid Aug to mid Oct. The tuna window varies year after year on a number of conditions but generally the fisherman stop fishing before the tuna quit biting as seen last month (October 2009). The best shot at tuna from November 1 on is head out on a long range trip for 5 days or more - 10 dayers popular trips - fishing the Baja Coast. This is the start of the Giant Yellowfin Tuna "cows" season for fish to 400lbs - a 357lb was caught off Cabo a few weeks back. Thats the scoop for the San Diego scene.

News Flash - San Diego Sportfishing Report Jan. 18, 2010: All landings - Rain all week has kept most boats in Rock fising is closed to fishing in U.S. waters because of seasonal closures until March 1 or DFG. Check DFG web for latest info. Bonito, Rockfish, Calico Bass and Sand Bass have been keeping anglers busy as well as Twilight Giant Squid trips with the New Seaforth having the best success on the big inker's. This time of year has potential for spawning "candy bait" size squid great for White Seabass, Halibut and home guard Yellowtail along with the Giant Humbolt's common to La Jolla Canyon. Check here or your favorite source daily for report.

News Flash - San Diego Sportfishing Report Dec. 29, 2009 - Fish Report Including Outlook for San Diego Winter 2009/2010: All landings - If you want to fish light load Southern California sport fishing boats with a plethora of excellent eating fish then then break out the new tackle (or whatever you have) and get those lines wet. Whether it's for Rock Cod off the popular Indian out of H&M Landing, the San Diego, Chubasco II or Malihini popular 3/4 day trips or a host of other open party (also open for charter) this can be a fun and productive time to fish.

Nov. 14, I spoke with the owner/captain of Alexes Sportfishing who tells me there's a good mix of fish being caught right now for Alexes six pack and the open party sport fishing fleet. Even some surface action improving with a nice Bonito bite and a few Calico Bass. The bottom fishing continues to be good to excellent with Rockfish, Rock Cod and a few keeper Halibut. Thanks as always to Gary from the Alexes for his reports. For a knowledgeable, reputable and family friendly 6-pack the Alexes is a good choice. If Gary is booked there are a few other six packs in the area as well like the Reward, Impulse or 4 pack boat Blackjack at Dana Landing .

Nov.4, 2009 - I spoke with Captain/Owner Gary of the 6 - pack sportfishing boat Alexes this morning and Gary reports the wind last week rolled over the warmer water so popular targets like Bonito and Yellowtail has slowed for now. Gary recommends his popular 5am - 5pm full day trip for the widest varety of species - Rockfish, Sand Bass and Halibut but never rule out a nice homeguard Yellowtail or a Bontio. Both of these fish are explosive fighting fish. These 5 - 5's leave enough time to get some good fishing time in at the Coronado Islands should the Yellows be biting. For booking a trip on the Alexes or more info contact Gary at 619-990-0926 and at www.AlexesSportfishing.com - Rob Mailly, 2:07pm, SportfishSanDiego.com

Nov. 1 by Rob - With the time change comes the half day boats run once a day and are targeting rockfish, bonito, halibut and possbily yellowtail. There's been some nice size halibut being landed lately. The overnight fleet is running Mexico rock cod trips. The Indian or Sea Adventure 80 out of H&M Landing or the Legend out of Seaforth Sportfishing are good open party or larger group charter bets. For 6 -ack charters check out Dana Landing's fleet the Impulse, Blackjack and thw Reward. If Gary Abbomont is running trips on the Alexes or the El Gato Dos out of Seaforth these are 2 good boats there.

Sept. 4 - 9 - The current fish report for San Diego sportfishing boats is warm water and Yellowfin Tuna for 3/4 day or popular 5am to 5pm 6-pack group charters like the Alexes out of Seaforth or down the street at Dana Landing. Boats are either scratching for a few troll fish of these these awesome fish or rolling up to paddies holding much better counts and more wide open fishing we all like to see this time of year for any experience level angler. Paddies also holding Yellowtail (Jack) and Dorado for a wild rodeo style fighting fish. Book a 5am to 5pm on any one of San Diego's 6 pack's out of Seaforth or Dana Landing. Reward, Alexes, El Gato Dos, Impulse or the 4-pack Blackjack out of Dana Landing are all good 6 pack choices. 3/4 day the Chubasco II or San Diego both good choices. My boat profiles pages have all the info on these boats.

The San Diego 3/4 day came back yesterday with 146 Yellowfin Tuna, 17 Dorado 6 yellows (Yellowtail). Chubasco II 9 angles catch 43 Calicos and 4 Sheephead. Capt./Owner Ernie is also running the offshore trips for the exotics that have been biting. I really like Ernie's operation, class act book a trip with his boat and get into some of the good fishing going on.

Sept. 3 - Last minute report from Capt. Scott McDaniels of the Grande and Sea Adventure 80 - Albacore on the chew in San Diego. Best fleet score yesterday!  Fish are at 31 25 / by 118 10 best of luck The fish are moving a lot on a warm water edge. So pay attention to your sea temp gage.
Most sportfishing boats have lots of room these days.

Sept. 2 - Saltwater offshore fishing is heating up as the hurricane makes its way north up Baja toward California. Every day has been something different it seems the past month. On any day boats have been doing well with a variety of tunas - Yellowfin, Bluefin, Albacore and of course Skipjack. Combined with exotics Dorado and Yellowtail makes for some good deep sea fishing the past month to present. Look for good 3/4 day sport fishing trips as well with the added excellent bonus of the above species for these trips as well as the fish move within overnighter, full day and three-quarter day range. Half-day sportfishing boats have been in the usual mix of Calico Bass, Sand Bass, Rockcod, Bonito, Barricuda and scratching a few Yellowtail as well. My 3/4 day boat pick is Captain/Owner Ernie Prieto's Chubasco 2. If you wonder what some of these fish look like a friend's kid did some nice fish art sketches.

This would be a great time to book a 6 pack charter trip at Dana Landing or next door at Seaforth with the El Gato Dos or Alexes being my usual picks for reputable 6-pac charters. More info on any of these boats can be found on my new Boat Profiles Page . I like the 5am to 5pm chartered trips for the best bang for the buck and with the exotics and tunas possibly moving in a great time to get out for the day with the family or a few friends. Please tell the office that I sent you over, thanks.

August 19 - Multiple boat and landing fish report this morning jig strike stops for Albacore, Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Skipjack, Yellowtail and a few Dorado. Overnighter's reporting stops close to home. Bluefin's weren't biting much so far for the mornings which leads to my next suggestion of taking the extra time and money for a 1.5 day trip as this way you get in on any pm bite that may turn up. The one and a half day trips have been reporting some excellent runs a that real nice variety of fish even the Albies still hanging around. Tight lines everyone, feel free to email me (Rob) anytime for ANY qestions regardless of experience or age.

August 18 - These reports from multiple sources across the open party and charter fleet. Yellowfin Tuna have been dominating the 1.5 day to 2 day fish counts and reports. The Dolphin 2 returned from an excellent 1.5 day trip with wide open Yellowfin, some Albacore, Bluefin and Dorado. Captain/Owner Greg is running a open party trip 1.5 day on the Dolphin 2 leaving Sat. night Call - 619-971-5941 for info. Seaforth Sportfishing reports 1.5 day Open Party Tuna trips leaving most nights this week. The half day and three-quarter day boats are seeing some Calico Bass, Bonito, Barracuda and hit or miss on the local Yellowtail.

August 16 - These reports from multiple sources across the fleet. Current fish reports from fishing boats Legend, Dolphin 2 and Sea Adventure 80 all have been running day to 1.5 day trips with consistent bite on the Bluefin Tuna and Albacore Tuna (BFT's and Albie's). Bluefin Tuna 40# test-4/0 hooks recommended to take along these trips as well as the Shimano Butterfly Jigs have been scoring on the Bluefin. For San Diego boats it's been hit or miss at times for the day fleet on Bluefin. One day huge takes the next just a handful but this is what makes it fishing and not catching.
