Sportfishing out of San Diego is where I started fishing at the early age of 6 with my father. Here's a few trip reviews of my favorite daily open party fishing vessels out of San Diego and other Southern California areas. Southern California offers some of the best and most accessible sportfishing in the world for a very fair price. For under $100 you can get out on the water for a day and catch fish while having a hot meal and beverage. If time is concern, half-day sportfishing trips that depart daily throughout So Cal is unbeatable. Any of these boats can be charted for private groups. Have fun! Be sure to scroll down for boats North of San Diego.
Malihini - 3/4 Day - Runs daily out of H&M Landing.
Fisherman 3 - Half Day Charter - Captain J. D. McGriff is an excellent Captain and is very funny. I took my nephew out for his first trip with J. D. and he has been hooked since. He made it as productive as fun. Another fine boat I recommend. Before owning the "F3" Captain J. D. ran this boat for years for then owner Tim Green who now owns and operates the San Diego half-day sportfisher Premier. J. d. is another excellent choice for a group charter.
Premier - Half Day open party and private charter - Tim Green's half-day boat Premier is the daily half-day boat replacing the Fisherman 3 (see above) several years back. Big 81' x 25' of beam with a low profile to the water makes her a stable and spacious fishing platform. Captain Tim has owned and operated a few excellent, reputable boats over the years like the Malihini, Fisherman 3 and now the Premier. As long as Captain/Owner Tim Green is in the wheelhouse I suggest a trip on this boat. After fishing countless trips over the last 25 or so years with Tim I am confident your group will have a successful and good trip fished as open party or private charter.
Oceanside 95 - This boat usually fishes overnighters and multi-day tuna trips and occasionally half-day trips which can be a bonus for half-day fishermen wanting to experience what a bigger boat is like during tuna season. I haven't fished this boat in some time but she has always had a veteran crew both personable and excellent deckhands. Located in Oceanside Harbor next to Camp Pendalton Marine Corps Base. If you are a United States Marine stationed at Camp Pendalton, Helgren's Sportfishing borders the base in North San Diego County. Newport Landing boats are halos fairly close within an hour's drive North.
Electra 1/2 day - Electra departs daily from Oceanside Harbor for visitor's to North San Diego County. Electra has been completely refit 2015 and the entire Helgren's operation has had a much improved face lift. I fished Electra and Sea Trek for years with Joey Helgren of Helgren's Sportfishing
All other San Diego half-day and three-quarter day boats:
Newport Landing Sportfishing - Half day through multi-day sportfishing trips for visitors to Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Los Angeles and Orange County OC.
Davey's Locker Sportfishing Landing - Half day through multi-day sportfishing trips for visitors to Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Los Angeles and Orange County OC.
Closest landing to the LAX and Los Angles.

Alexes 6-pack fishing charters has plenty of charter openings if anyone is looking for a last minute 6-pack sportfishing charter. Alexes owner/captain Gary Abbamonte says prices are all inclusive. Alexes runs a very popular 5am to 5pm charter that SportfishSanDiego.com has booked as few as a father/son charter up to six guests. Gary can be reached on the Alexes daily on his cell at 619-990-0926

This is a good time to fish off San Diego and Southern California as passenger loads are light, there's still some Yellowtail being caught at the Coronado Island's Captain Bill called to me today from Malihini, and plenty of tasty Rock Cod to fill the freezer or tortilla's for tasty fish tacos So Cal Style. Contact Rob for any boat suggestions or length trip.
Long range boats on 3 to 5 day trips are not only getting blue fin tuna and Yellowtail, now yellowfin tuna are in the mix. One day and 1 1/2 day boats have been fishing anywhere from 45 to 100 miles for good scores. Some days it is hit and miss, some days everyone is on it. Chances are, if you go on a trip now, you the best shot at landing fish is Yellowtail and Blue fin Tuna. The tuna have been 15 to 60 pounds, so bring a variety of tackle from 25 to 60 pound test. Definitely take fluorocarbon and circle hooks if you have them as this has been the hot tackle tips.
